From a private winter retreat to one of Southwest Florida’s most beloved destinations, four families shaped Cabbage Key into what it is today.

Beginning in 1936, Alan and Gratia Rinehart developed Palmetto Key and built the remarkable estate that became today’s inn and restaurant. In 1944, Larry and Jan Stults transformed the private residence into an island inn, welcoming guests for the next 25 years.

James Turner and Bob and Jo Ann Beck followed, introducing the bar and beginning the famous tradition of covering its walls with signed dollar bills. Finally, in 1976, Robert and Phyllis Wells took over, preserving the island’s history while building Cabbage Key into the iconic Old Florida destination enjoyed by generations of visitors today.
